Coke Makes Real Rainbows in Johannesburg to Celebrate 20 Years of Democracy

Beverage Brand Celebrates the ‘Rainbow Nation’

20 years ago, South Africa elected Nelson Mandela in the country’s first-ever democratic election, leading Archbishop Desmond Tutu to coin the phrase “The Rainbow Nation,” referring to the country’s diverse people. Coke celebrates the anniversary with real rainbows, created out of recycled water, sunlight and some magic. Using a “mist” of water that captured the sun, the brand conjured multiple colorful arches that appeared above and alongisde its billboards in Johannesburg. The rainbows even reached the ground, for those who sought to discover where they ended.
